The Thurso Pipeline Valve Replacement Project involved upgrading 11.7km of water pipe from Latheron to Lybster in the Scottish Highlands.

A cast iron water main supplying approximately 450 properties required 5 very old valves to be switched out.

The traditional approach would be to shut off the mains for each valve replacement causing water supply to stop multiple times. Instead, Scottish Water selected the WASK AquaStop bypass solution to ensure continued water supply to customers and reduce the overall installation time on site, minimising disruption, and cost.

Please watch the video below to find out more about the project and hear from Scottish Water and MAL Civils about the real-world benefits of the WASK AquaStop.

170 Years

This July 4th 2025 marks 170 years since R.T. Crane famously opened his one-man foundry in the United States and poured his first order and penned the resolution in 1855 that guides Crane Co to this day.

R.T. Crane’s first big break came only 1 month after starting his foundry. A representative of P.W. Gates and Co., a large manufacturer of freight cars, engines, and saw mills, brought some patterns of “car-boxes” for Crane to see. They asked whether he could make these metal containers that held the lubricating material to lessen axle friction on railroad cars. Due to the scarcity of copper in Chicago, Gate’s regular supplier was unable to fill these orders and Crane jumped on the opportunity. After securing a cask of copper from a smelter he happened to know in Detroit, he delivered his fine castings on schedule. A satisfied customer, P.W. Gates and Co. subsequently awarded ALL of its orders for car-boxes to the up-and-coming R.T. Crane Brass and Bell Foundry.

A key to Crane’s success from the very beginning was an unwavering commitment to listening to the voice of the customer and ensuring customer satisfaction

Crane picnic

Company anniversaries were festive occasions at Crane. One of the most notable was the Fiftieth Jubilee Celebration on July 6, 1905. R.T. Crane reserved sixteen special trains to carry the employees from Chicago’s Northwestern Station to Northwestern Park in Des Plaines, where the above photographed Jubilee picnic was held.

SGN is undertaking a vital upgrade of Scotland’s gas infrastructure near Dunkeld, driven by riverbank erosion along the River Tay. WASK’s PECAT® Valve Flange Adaptors are providing essential transition points in the new high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline.

The PECAT Valve Flange Adaptors enable seamless connections between the new PE pipeline and critical components such as flanged pipes, valves, and other key equipment along the 14km route between Birnam and Logierait. Their innovative design ensures secure and efficient connectivity, making them a crucial element in the future-proofing of Scotland’s gas transportation system.

This pipeline upgrade, which includes the construction of a new transmission regulator station and a district governor, will enhance the safety and reliability of gas supplies to thousands of homes across the region. The WASK adaptors demonstrate the importance of robust engineering solutions in safeguarding essential infrastructure.
